Cardinals can't stop the pass

Posted Dec. 14 at 01:33 PM

The Cardinals have been best known this year for their big passing production. Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin have had great years.

But Arizona actually has allowed four more touchdown passes than it’s thrown – a league-high 31 TD passes after getting burned for 4 TDs on Sunday by Tarvaris Jackson of all people.

The Cardinals now have become just the second team ever to win its division while giving up 30 touchdown passes, joining the 2004 Packers. And only five other teams have qualified for the postseason while giving up that many touchdowns on pass plays.

Two of those teams, coincidentally, met in the playoffs four years ago – when the Vikings pulled a 31-17 upset at Green Bay (the game now best remembered for Randy Moss’ fake mooning of the Lambeau crowd). None of those teams went to the Super Bowl. The 1983 Seahawks came closest, beating Denver in a wild-card game, upsetting then-rookie Dan Marino at Miami, then losing 30-14 to the Raiders in the AFC Championship game.

TD  Year   team  (record)   postseason result
33  1983 Seattle Seahawks (9-7) went 2-1 in playoff games
35  1986 New York Jets (10-6) went 1-1 in playoff games
30  1995 Miami Dolphins (9-7) lost 37-22 at Buffalo in playoff opener
32  2000 St. Louis Rams (10-6) lost 31-28 at New Orleans in playoff opener
33  2004 Green Bay Packers (10-6) lost 31-17 to Minnesota in playoffs
30  2004 Minnesota Vikings (8-8) went 1-1 in playoff games
31  2008 Arizona Cardinals (8-6) will open with home game
