Factoid
In looking for a potential Super Bowl team, I like to look at how that team performs against top competition – against good opposition, and on the road against that kind of team.
So below, find composite wins and losses of the 12 playoff teams in games against teams with winning records. Separately, also see the subset of those games, showing just the work in games away from home.
By this measure, three teams stand out – Colts, Titans and Giants. They were the only teams that compiled winning records against good opponents, as well as winning records against those kind of teams on the road. Most impressive single team? Probably the Colts. One of their losses against a good team came on opening day (against Chicago), when Indianapolis was working through some rust and injury issues; and the Colts also won a big game on the road against San Diego (the Chargers finished only 8-8, so that game isn’t included here).
Least impressive? Arizona and Carolina. Both of those teams went 0-4 on the road against teams with winning records.
