Carolina's one-two punch at tailback

Posted Jan. 10 at 02:37 PM

DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart each scored 10-plus touchdowns this year.

Previously, that had happened only six times in the 30 years since the NFL went to a 16-game schedule in 1978.

Oddly, however, those teams weren’t nearly as successful as you might think. Only three of those seven teams made the playoffs, and only one won even one postseason game (that would be the 1988 Bengals, who made to the Super Bowl before losing 20-16 to San Francisco).

New Orleans Saints (1979)
  11  Chuck Muncie
  10  Tony Galbreath
Record: 8-8-0

Cincinnati Bengals (1985)
  12  James Brooks
  10  Larry Kinnebrew
Record: 7-9-0

Cleveland Browns (1985)
  10  Earnest Byner
  10  Kevin Mack
Record: 8-8-0 (lost first playoff game)

Cincinnati Bengals (1988)
  15  Ickey Woods
  14  James Brooks
Record: 12-4-0 (lost in Super Bowl)

Cleveland Browns (1991)
  10  Kevin Mack
  11  Leroy Hoard
Record: 6-10-0

Kansas City (2004)
  11  Larry Johnson
  15  Priest Holmes
Record: 7-9-0

Carolina Panthers (2008)
  20  DeAngelo Williams
  10  Jonathan Stewart
Record: 12-4 (lost first playoff game)
