Around the NFL
Matt Maiocco, a beat writer for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, has posted a nice overview of where the 49ers are headed entering the 2009 season.
San Francisco fired Mike Martz, so the offense will be dramatically different. More running and less passing.
In Maiocco's article (and to access it, click here) he writes that the the starting quarterback likely will be Shaun Hill. J.T. O'Sullivan is a Martz guy, so it's unlikely he'll even be back.
Maiocco also speculates that tight end Vernon Davis should be a lot more productive. Davis was underutilized by Martz, with only 49 pass attempts even sent his way. Davis doesn't have great hands, but new offensive coordinatory Jimmy Raye should make a bigger effort to get him the ball. Raye was an assistant with the Jets last year, where they used the tight ends more.
I checked my own tight ends numbers. The Jets completed 75 passes to tight ends last year, which tied for 10th-most in the league. My early guess, there, is that Davis will come in somewhere around 10th to 15th among tight ends on my board.
