Matt Jones could be finished

Posted Mar. 09 at 03:33 PM

Matt Jones has some talent. But he can't seem to stay out of trouble, and the Jaguars (and the league) have to be getting tired of him.

Jones was arrested last July after police officers say they saw him cutting up cocaine with a credit card in a car. He made a plea deal in that case.

And now Jones is in jail again, after violating terms of his probation. According to an article at Jacksonville.com, Jones failed a drug test and had a controlled substance in his possession on Monday in Fayetteville, Ark.

Jones will spend the rest of this week in jail. He could be subject to additional jail time, and the league almost certainly slap him with a suspension of four-plus games. Probably eight-plus games is more accurate. He sat out the final three games of last season via league suspension.

So who's going to start at wide receiver for this team? The Jaguars weren't interested in signing Terrell Owens. They probably won't re-sign Reggie Williams, who was arrested on the day free agency opened and likely will be charged with DWI and marijuana possession. And they cut Jerry Porter.

Dennis Northcutt played well for them late last year, but he's an older, undersized guy. Maybe Mike Walker will pan out. And there are a few lesser free agents out there -- guys like Marvin Harrison and Bobby Engram. It doesn't look good.
