Around the NFL
A couple of months back, it looked like offensive tackle Andre Smith might be the first pick in the draft. Now he looks unlikely to be selected in the top 15.
Smith declined to work out at the combine, then turned off teams by leaving early. And when he held his pro workout today at Alabama, his numbers were terrible.
Smith ran slow, appeared to be out of shape, and he bench-pressed 225 pounds only 19 times. Jason Smith is now seen as the top candidate at tackle; he did 33 reps on the bench press at the combine.
In each of the drills Smith did in his personal workout -- 40, bench press, 3-cone drill, vertical jump and broad jump -- his numbers were short of the top 10 finishers among offensive linemen at the Indianapolis combine. And worse, he looked flabby and out of shape.
Little drills aren't necessarily the best way to measure an offensive line -- not as important as at other positions. But right now, Smith looks like a major risk. No way, it seems, will any team take him with a top-10 selection.
Smith's numbers appear at NFL.com.
