Cutler's future could be clearer by Monday

Posted Mar. 12 at 12:05 AM

A conference call between Jay Cutler, agent Bus Cook, and the Denver Broncos left both sides with different views of the relationship: The Broncos thought it went well, Cutler and his agent thought it went poorly.

At this point it seems possible that Cutler and Cook want out, period: doesn't sound like they're ready to let fences be mended. They might also be angling for a sizable new contract, which is more likely to come from a franchise that just traded for Cutler and is fully committed to him, rather than one that was shopping him a few weeks ago.

The future of this relationship might be clearer by Monday, when Denver's offseason training program begins. That program is "voluntary," but of course it often reflects badly on the players who choose not to attend. In Cutler's case, more will be read into his absence, if he skips it, than would be with another player.

After that, the next clear sign of Cutler's future might be at Denver's first offseason minicamp, which is scheduled for April 17-19 -- the week before the draft. If Cutler is still a Bronco and isn't there for that minicamp, the chances of him being traded before the draft would seem substantially higher.

The Denver Post's story can be seen right here.
