Around the NFL
Joey Galloway signed with the Patriots yesterday, a move that gives him some value in leagues that place a premium on long touchdown receptions, and not much anywhere else.
In New England, as pretty much anywhere else he might have signed (Pittsburgh and Buffalo were among the other suitors for the veteran, although Buffalo signed Terrell Owens), Galloway will be at best a third or perhaps a fourth receiver, presumably running deep routes down the field every now and then. With Randy Moss typically drawing safety help, Galloway's chances of catching a few long touchdowns next year are probably better than they would have been elsewhere.
Perhaps the Steelers, still in need of another wideout who could replace Nate Washington, will now turn their attention to veteran Torry Holt.
The Boston Globe's coverage of the Galloway signing is basically a footnote in this story. New England also added Greg Lewis to its receiver mix this offseason.
