Around the NFL
According to an article by Tony Pauline for the Sports Illustrated website, Matt Stafford did well enough at a personal workout today that there's a good chance the Lions will select him No. 1 overall.
Detroit definitely needs a quarterback, but they could go a number of different routes. They could put off that position until next year, going with safer choices. Or they could hope one of the other big quarterbacks in this draft -- Mark Sanchez or Josh Freeman -- is still around at pick No. 20.
They might not even think Stafford is the best quarterback. Some scouts like Sanchez more. (And the same issue, by the way, is there at running backs, with scouts divided on Knowshon Moreno and Beanie Wells as the top back).
The Lions hold the No. 1 pick, so they have the luxury of being able to negotiate with players before making the selection.
