Around the NFL
What offseason? A day after the Bears stole the sports headlines by acquiring Jay Cutler, the Giants have done their part in making the NFL the big story again, by cutting Plaxico Burress. Burress is probably best known for catching the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl two years ago, although his arrest on a weapons charge last season at least makes it into the top 2.
There had been some talk that maybe the Giants would ride out his legal troubles and likely suspension, including statements by teammates hoping Burress would be able to return. The Giants haven't made much of an effort to replace him with another top receiver, although there were reports that they had talked with the Browns about Braylon Edwards. With Burress' release, perhaps New York will attempt to acquire Edwards or another rumored target, Anquan Boldin. It's unlikely the team will go into next season with only Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith and Mario Manningham atop their depth chart.
As for Burress, he's scheduled to appear in court in June on charges related to the nightclub incident where he shot himself in the leg. He'll probably remain unemployed until after that case is heard (which will no doubt be followed by an NFL suspension even if he avoids jail time).
