Rosenfels dishes up too many interceptions

Posted Apr. 08 at 09:12 AM

Looking to upgrade their quarterbacking situation, the Vikings traded for Sage Rosenfels.

He’s had sporadic success the last two years while filling in for Matt Schaub, but I’m not sure he’s going to be the guy for them. I don’t think he’s quite good enough.

As you poke around with the numbers, you’ll see that Rosenfels had some real nice games for the Texans. He nearly beat Indianapolis last year. And there are some Houston fans who think he should have been starting ahead of Schaub.

But Rosenfels also definitely puts too many passes up for grabs. And that becomes apparent when you look at the numbers below. Too many interceptions. Among quarterbacks who’ve started at least 10 games in the last two years, only one (of those 42 quarterbacks) has thrown more touchdowns per game. And only one quarterback (the guy he’s replacing, Gus Frerotte) has thrown a higher percentage of interceptions.

Ultimately, I think Rosenfels will be another Derek Anderson. Takes too many chances. When he’s on his game and has the hot hand, he looks like a good quarterback. But ultimately, when the chips are down and when opponents start to figure him out, Rosenfels should not be one of the league’s 32 starting quarterbacks.

Included on this list are all quarterbacks who’ve attempted at least 300 passes in the last two seasons.
