Ryan likes Clowney, Smith

Laveranues Coles signed with Cincinnati, so the Jets are looking for a wide receiver. Rather than swinging a mega-deal for a guy like Anquan Boldin, Braylon Edwards or Chad Ocho Cinco, however, they look more likely to try to fill that spot from within.
Rex Ryan, in an article posted today by Tim Graham, the AFC East reporter for ESPN.com, says he likes what he sees so far from David Clowney and Brad Smith.
Ryan says he likes Clowney's speed. And he's always been intrigued by Smith's athletic potential.
"He is one of the scariest athletes in the league. He really is," Ryan said. "This is the time, right now, this year, that he needs to step up. Can he be an every-down receiver? We are going to find out."

Say this for Rex Ryan, he's relentlessly optimistic. According to him, the Jets like their in-house candidates at quarterback (Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff, Erik Ainge) and wide receiver, plus he's not worried about Thomas Jones' absence from voluntary workouts. Whatever he says, though, I'm going to be surprised if the Jets don't use that first pick on either a QB or a WR -- either in the draft or in a trade.
