Vikings could add Favre

Posted May. 02 at 07:21 AM

With Brett Favre and the Vikings, it might not be a question of if but when.

Favre hasn't said he's going to come back, but why else would he ask the Jets multiple times to relinquish his rights?

And Brad Childress admits Minnesota is mulling the idea of bringing in the league's all-time passing leader. They tried to hook up last season, and the Vikings haven't committed much to the position -- they've got Tarvaris Jackson coming back, and they've got Sage Rosenfels signed to a modest contract.

This could happen. (Hopefully sooner than later, so we don't have endure months of will-he-or-won't-he drama).

Favre playing the Packers both home and away. That would be fun.

"We talk about everything," says Childress. "So, yeah, I'm sure we'll talk about that."

I'm not sure Viking fans that have hated Favre for years are going to like this development. Favre is over the hill, but Childress will only get fired if he keeps screwing up and he's close. Why would he take such a chance on Percy Harvin if he wasn't going for broke?

You're based in Minnesota, so you'd probably know better than me. But I would think for the average Vikings fan, his hatred of Favre would be far outweighed by the enjoyment of sticking it to the Packers.

You would not believe how hotly discussed and debated the topic has been here in MN. Radio, news, everyone has been talking about Favre since his quiet second retirement from the Jets. The split looks to me to be about 50-50. As a longtime Vikings fan who lived very near to Green Bay for years (and whose entire extended family lives and breathes Packers football) I agree with Ian - sticking it too the Packers would be such sweet, sweet revenge. At the same time, my wife (also a lifelong Vikings fan - and not your typically "unknowledgeable" female football fan) despises Favre so strongly that she "would rather cheer for the Packers than for Favre in any uniform" should Brett cross the Mississippi. And other fans have written that they would rather go 0-16 without Favre than win a Super Bowl with him. Without a doubt, this issue makes for some of the best football discussion here in MN. :-)

I'm the biggest Favre fan I know, but I wonder who would stick it to who if he came back with the Vikings. A year ago, the guy's body broke down -- something about playing every game for 17 years and taking all those hits and being 39 years old, I imagine. I really hoped he knew it was over when he retired from the Jets. I hope he knows it now, too. I tend to think another return might have a few good moments early, but would probably end like last year, and probably sooner than 12 games into the season.
