Garcia pickup looks like a good one

Posted Jun. 03 at 02:18 AM

I find myself really liking Oakland’s signing of Jeff Garcia.

JaMarcus Russell hasn’t made much progress in his first two years, and if he’s not ready to perform at a higher level, they’ll need somebody who can step in and play. They’ve lost 10-plus games a record six years in a row, so they need to win some games this year – they really need to win about eight games and get out of that laughingstock category.

Garcia is too small and too old, but he keeps getting the results on the field. Consider the following two charts. One shows quarterbacks with the best ratios of TDs to interception over the last three years. The other shows win-loss records. Garcia is well represented on both of them.

Al Davis will not hand the reins over to a weak-armed quarterback unless Jamarcus Russell is in a body bag. He wants a quarterback who can throw deep.

I agree. Everybody wants JaMarcus Russell to emerge. Suppose, though, that he's simply not getting it done, and the losses, sacks and interceptions are piling up. Russell's weight balloons past 300 pounds because he's popping cheeseburgers like they're Tic-Tacs. Having Garcia at least gives Oakland somebody else to stick in there.
