Around the NFL
A probable factor in reports that teams like the Bears, Bucs and Jets have cooled on the idea of signing Plaxico Burress? Maybe none of them expect him to be playing in the league in 2009.
According to a Yahoo! Sports report, Commissioner Roger Goodell is leaning toward indefinitely suspending Burress, as he did with Donte Stallworth two weeks ago. If that happens, Burress might find himself unable to return to the NFL until his legal case involving an accidental shooting is resolved.
According to the report, Goodell might be annoyed that Burress has resisted any plea deals that included jail time, instead seeking delays in order to play for a team this season. If so, it could be the delays themselves which keep Burress out of the league until 2010.
The same report suggests that Michael Vick won't be able to step right out of prison/house arrest and onto an NFL field this summer, either. Goodell may want to see Vick, upon the conclusion of his sentence in late July, actually demonstrate regret for his actions before allowing him back into the league.
Burress is being drafted in the latter rounds of most drafts I've participated in or seen. If this report is correct, it may turn out to be a wasted pick.
