Detroit's trade for Dennis Northcutt becomes official today, with the paperwork being filed with the league office.
The Lions traded away a former second-round pick (Gerald Alexander) to get him, so they apparently value Northcutt. Alexander missed most of last year with a back injury, but he's healthy now.
According to Nicholas J. Cotsonika's blog with the Detroit Free Press, Northcutt should be used as a slot receiver on third downs, with Calvin Johnson and Bryant Johnson being the team's two starting receivers. The Lions also signed Ronald Curry, who had some decent seasons in the not-too-distant past with the Raiders. Cotsonika says Northcutt also likely will return punts
James Harris likely played a big role in the Lions getting Northcutt. Harris (the Lions' senior personnel executive) was with the Jaguars when they signed Northcutt to a free-agent deal a few years back.
