Sacred football Sundays - Bryan Bertsch

Posted Oct. 19 at 10:20 AM

Football Sunday has always been a sacred day for me. Even before fantasy football I always enjoyed relaxing and watching the games every week. As a child, football Sunday meant sleeping in (except the years I had a paper route), having a nice breakfast, then building a fire with my dad before watching Brent Musburger and Jimmy the Greek tells us about the day to come. Football was big in my house and I grew to love the game.

Fantasy football brought the excitement to new levels as an adult. And now that I have a wife and three kids of my own, I’ve created our own Sacred Football Sunday.

Time with my children is a stretch between my work and extracurriculars. So to alienate them for big chunks of time on Sundays in the fall wouldn’t feel right. Instead, I use my passion and love for the game to create a family day of togetherness and bonding.

We usually start with a trip to the farmer’s market, followed by a morning hike or some other high adventure. I’m going to be inside most of the afternoon so it’s nice to enjoy the outdoors in the morning. And I’d like my kids, especially my two boys ages 6 and 4, to get their wiggles out.

I’ve listened to the Sunday morning talking heads enough to not bother anymore, instead choosing to leave the t.v. off until kick-off. My kids love my chili, so I usually put together a batch of that in the slow cooker in the morning as well. I make enough for lunch and dinner, to ease the stress of meal prep during the afternoon.

Before kick-off we always build a fire. It is the fire and the chili that brings in my daughter Zoe, who is 13. I strategically do not make any chili in the Spring or Summer, so by September Zoe, who “despises” football, is looking forward to football Sunday as much as the rest of us.

My two boys could care less about the games as well, but we usually have puzzles, cards and other games spread out and I can usually take part in that. Just not around 2:30-3:30 when the early bunch of games are coming to conclusion.

Football Sundays are a special day for me, and I hope I am able to make it a special day for my family as well. This way I can enjoy it without the guilt – and even better it becomes a special bonding day for all of us.

Bryan, I'm a Minnesotan too! (Zimmerman) You have to find a way to get your sons interested in football. (Vikings) Their Viking life depends on it! (Doesn't matter how old they are!) I have twin sons that are now 30 years old and by the time they were in 7th grade they had formed their own fantasy league. When my sons were very little one of them asked me "Who do the people hope to win?". I was stumped for awhile until I realized that he wanted to know who the home team was. Throw the puzzles out and get them interested in football! They could grow up to be Packer fans if you don't watch out! Duane

I have no worries that my boys won't be Vikings fans...They do take a small interest already. I just won't jam it down their throats. They know the Purple Team is our team.
