Four sleepers in a row

Posted Aug. 13 at 05:10 AM

In this ongoing (via e-mail) Fanex Draft, I’ve now gone with sleepers four picks in a row.

First I added Laveranues Coles at pick 7.02. Early for him (particularly since I already had four receivers), but you can play four receivers in this league and it’s a PPR format. I think he might be pretty much everything T.J. Houshmandzadeh was, catching about 85 balls and 8 TDs.

At choice 9.02, I went with running back Leon Washington. Unproven guy, but I expect he’ll have a much bigger role for the Jets this year – probably be their No. 1 guy. He’ll catch 40-50 passes (or more), and it’s a PPR league. I had no tight end at this point, and would have loved to selected Zach Miller, but not much left at running back. There are, however some other good tight ends.

At choice 10.11, I’m going with yet another wide receiver. Earl Bennett of the Bears. He doesn’t really fit into our offense (I’ve got five other really good receivers), but if Bennett winds up being an 80-catch player, I wouldn’t want him to go to another team. Maybe he’ll start some games for us. Maybe I’ll trade him. Dunno. But I’m high enough on him that I didn’t want to risk hoping that he’d still be around at 12.11.

At choice 11.02, Brent Celek is the choice. He played a big role in me letting Zach Miller go a few picks back. Celek should be outstanding for the Eagles this year, maybe catching 65 passes and 7 TDs. He was very good in his brief run as a starter last season. The Eagles were high on the athleticism Cornelius Ingram brings to the position, but Ingram (ACL) is out for the year.

Fanex is a 24-team league that's set up like European soccer. Top 12 seeds, based on past performance, are in the American League. Other 12 are in the National League. Each year, the bottom four teams in the American League are replaced by the top four in the National. Each league has a separate winner. Overall champion of the Fanex is considered to be the winner of the American League.

how is L. Coles a "sleeper"? Leon Washington "unproven"? I do like the picks but it seems about where they are usually being picked in mocks.

I don't have access to dozens of mocks. I drafted Washington at 9.02. In the other two Fanex drafts, he was picked 9.11 (by me) and 11.08. I picked Coles at 7.02; he went 7.09 and 8.05 in the other two Fanex drafts. If you dig out 30 or 50 or whatever mocks, I will be surprised if Coles or Washington is selected higher in a significant number of them.
