Eagles sign Vick; get your snowballs ready?

Posted Aug. 13 at 10:11 PM

NFL fans in the City of Brotherly Love are known for such things as cheering an injury to Michael Irvin and throwing snowballs at Santa Claus, so it's not surprising that the Eagles' signing of Michael Vick would stir some emotional responses.

But this?

The Philadelphia Daily News headlined today's edition with "Hide Your Dogs" and "What Are They Thinking"? One columnist reported that Donovan McNabb said the move was "no different, really, than bringing in Terrell Owens" -- amusing to him "because that worked out so well."

The general reaction by Eagles fans is a little unclear. Voting in online polls at the Philly newspaper websites appear to be running about 60-40 against the move. ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, who was at the team's exhibition game in Philadelphia last night, said fans were in "a state of shock," and that calling the reaction "mixed" was charitable.

Aside from the fan reaction -- because again, it didn't really matter that drafting McNabb was an unpopular decision with some followers -- what will this mean for the team? Andy Reid maintains there won't be a quarterback controversy, which is reasonable; McNabb's a much better quarterback, and that was before Vick spent two years away from the game. It sounds like Vick will have some sort of Wildcat role; McNabb of course hasn't been much of a running quarterback in recent years.

And if McNabb gets injured -- and he does have somewhat of a history of it -- it will likely be Vick trotting out onto the field to lead the offense.

Just hope it hasn't snowed recently.
