ESPN: Jets acquire Edwards from Browns

Posted Oct. 06 at 11:00 PM

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Jets have acquired wide receiver Braylon Edwards from the Browns.

According to this story, the cost is Chansi Stuckey, a backup linebacker and draft pick compensation.

The Jets have been looking to add a legitimate No. 1 wide receiver for months, with Plaxico Burress, Brandon Marshall and Edwards among the names mentioned. They were also reportedly interested in trading up for Percy Harvin during the draft, and have been accused of tampering with Michael Crabtree by the 49ers. So it's no secret they wanted to give Mark Sanchez more weapons -- Sanchez of course was drafted following another trade with the Browns and ex-coach Eric Mangini.

Edwards might have worn out his welcome in Cleveland after reportedly getting in a fight with a friend of LeBron James. New York's struggles in the passing game at New Orleans, as well as the emergence of rookie Mohamed Massaquoi in Cleveland, may also have factored into the deal getting done. Plus Mangini apparently likes making deals with the guy who fired him back in January.

Considering Stuckey was starting for the Jets, it's not out of the question that Edwards will be in the lineup when New York plays at Miami next Monday night.

How do you see this move affecting the value of the other players; Cotchery, Keller, Sanchez, or for that matter, Edwards? Barring a suspension, I would think that his presence here would at least slightly increase the value of the others mentioned.

I think Sanchez clearly needs another target, and Edwards needs to play with a better quarterback for a franchise that's not totally dysfunctional. So it's good for them. Keller and Cotchery, I don't think they necessarily benefit from Sanchez having another viable option. It's always a good debate: does Cotchery improve with lesser coverage, or decline because there's another place for the quarterback to throw the ball? If Edwards can catch and he helps Sanchez start throwing for 220ish yards every week, in the long run it will be better for Cotchery and Keller, I guess.
