Thanksgiving Turkeys

Posted Nov. 19 at 03:32 AM

It’s Thanksgiving, which means it’s time for the annual discussions as to whether different teams (besides Detroit and Dallas) should get a chance to host the Thanksgiving Day games each year, and squawking about the unfair advantage those hosts get from playing at home on a short work week. And while it might seem true that those home teams have a huge advantage, the recent history of these games doesn’t bear it out. If there’s really a major advantage, shouldn’t the Lions and Cowboys actually win a lot more of these games than they do?

In the last 15 years, the Lions are just 7-8 on Thanksgiving Day, and they’ve lost three in a row in blowout fashion. The Cowboys are only marginally better at 8-7. And if history is any indication, it’s a near-certainty that one of these teams will lose this Thursday. The last time both teams won on Thanksgiving was 1999. Safe to say that either the Packers or Jets will be celebrating a win on Thanksgiving night.

The results from the last 15 years of Thanksgiving Day games -- not including the third game added last year, which will be played at different sites -- are presented below.
