Fantasy News
Continuing with the grading of the Fantasy Index Experts Poll, some new faces have popped up. Kevin Marshall of Draftwizard.com is the winner in the wide receiver category, followed by Colin Darlington of MyStartEmSitEm.com.
James Serra of First Place Sports Software, meanwhile, remains the overall leader, with a lead of 1,153 points over Scott Pianowski (Yahoo! Sports). David Dorey (The Huddle), who finished 3rd in the wide receiver category, and Rick Hawes (Fanball) are about another 500 points back.
At wide receiver, Marshall didn’t make any one pick that gave him a huge advantage, but put together a well-rounded card. He was among the highest on Wes Welker (12th), Brandon Marshall (11th), Vincent Jackson (14th) and DeSean Jackson (18th). Those picks all helped him. And he was among the lowest on Steve Smith (8th), Terrell Owens (15th) and T.J. Houshmandzadeh (17th). Those picks all helped him relative to the other experts.
In this competition, every pick – 120 for each of the experts – is graded, with players receiving more credit the higher they are ranked. Marshall went with Larry Fitzgerald as his No. 1 wide receiver; that pick was worth 3,744 points (20 x 187.2). He went with Andre Johnson No. 2; that pick was worth 4,064 points (19 x 213.9). Follow that process for every pick by every expert and Marshall is the winner in this category.
The fantasy scoring system here is 6 points for TDs, 4 for TD passes, 1 for every 10 run/rec yards and 1 for every 20 passing yards.
When the scoring is done for all six positions, the top 11 finishers will win spots in our Mock Draft league (with the No. 1 finisher getting to choose where he would like to select). That field should be set in a few days.
The Fantasy Index picks aren't included in these results. Out of fairness to the competition, we stay in the administrator role. (Most notably, our picks aren't locked into the same deadline, which usually is around May 20.) But if you plug in our magazine picks, which are printed in early June, we would have fared poorly at the wide receiver position – as in 500 points behind every other expert. That’s almost solely due to Anthony Gonzalez getting hurt early in the first game of the season. We had Gonzalez 9th, while only three other experts even snuck him into the bottom of their top 20. In this scoring system, team health is crucial (since you’re not allowed to submit lineups or make waiver moves), and one injury can change everything. Had Gonzalez stayed healthy and done what we thought he would (1,100 yards and 8 TDs), we would have finished 2nd relative to the 20 experts.
