Tom Brookshier dead at 78

Posted Jan. 30 at 03:47 AM

Former Eagles defensive back Tom Brookshier died on Friday, according to the team website. He's one of seven members of that team to have his number retired.

Brookshier's work as a player came before the AFL-NFL merger. He was part of the team that won the NFL title in 1960, beating the Packers 17-13 in the championship game. That was Philadelphia's last championship.

For many, he is better remembered as the co-host (along with Pat Summerall) of the highlights show This Week In The NFL, which was the NFL PrimeTime of its day. In the '70s, they didn't have the ability to instantly turn around highlights. That show featured the footage from NFL Films, set to music by Sam Spence and others. It would air on the following Sunday morning -- just before the kickoff of the week's games.

That show helped draw me into being a fan of the NFL.
