Around the NFL
The Bears have made an interesting coaching move. They’re going with Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator.
There’s a story on this at the team’s official website.
Martz’s offenses tend to put up plenty of passing yards and passing touchdowns, but they also tend to result in lots of sacks, fumbles and interceptions. That’s what happens when you ask your quarterback to pass more often and also have him holding the ball longer on deeper pass drops – Martz likes to see the ball passed downfield, rather than the quick dumpoff passes to running backs.
Is this a good fit for Jay Cutler? Cutler threw 26 interceptions last year in a mostly disappointing first season with the Bears. With Martz on board, another 23-plus interceptions is probably in the works.
On the flip side, the Bears have a nice group of wide receivers. Devin Hester, Devin Aromashodu, Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett give the team the necessary depth at wide receiver to run the three- and four-receiver packages that Martz prefers.
Early forecast: Cutler will rank in the top 25 percent in passing yards and passing touchdowns, but few (if any) quarterbacks will be involved in more sacks and interceptions.
Below see a variety of charts showing how Mike Martz’s offenses have compared against the rest of the league during his last eight years of coaching. He was the head coach in St. Louis from 2000-2005, an offensive coordinator in Detroit in 2006 and 2007, and an offensive coordinator at San Francisco in 2008.
