Factoid
Matt Stover missed a big 51-yard field goal attempt in the Super Bowl. The attempt came early in the fourth quarter, with the Colts facing fourth-and-11 from the New Orleans 33-yard line and the score 17-16.
The Colts were kind of stuck in no man’s land on that one. It’s a lot to ask their offense to pick up 11 yards for a first down, and they were really too close to punt.
At the same time, 51 yards is out of range for the oldest player ever to participate in a Super Bowl. He’s never been a power kicker, and now he’s 42 years old.
The Colts also have Adam Vinatieri, who’s hit some clutch kicks, but he’s less than 100 percent with a hip injury and also has always struggled on long kicks. That’s why Indianapolis went with Stover as its kicker in the postseason.
Among active players with at least 15 attempts, in fact, Stover and Vinatieri are the two least accurate kickers in the league on long-range attempts.
