High-powered tight ends

Posted Feb. 24 at 09:34 AM

Below is a little follow-up on the tight end trend I mentioned earlier in the day. It’s a chart showing the top 40 tight ends of the decade (using the scoring system of 6 points for TDs and 1 point for every 10 yards).

There are 40 tight ends, so for a typical year, you would expect to see four tight ends listed. But for the 2009 season, nine different tight ends appear – over twice as many as you might expect.

Why this is happening, I’m not sure. Maybe we’re simply seeing more high-caliber athletes playing the position. Maybe players like Tony Gonzalez and Shannon Sharpe have inspired more great talents to choose the tight end position – and for coaches to get them involved. Antonio Gates, Greg Olsen, Jermichael Finley, Dustin Keller, Vernon Davis, Dallas Clark – there are a lot of great tight ends out there.
