Carr, Smith an ugly combo

Posted Mar. 08 at 04:08 AM

I was surprised how much interested there was in David Carr, who just signed with the 49ers as a No. 2 quarterback who could potentially push Alex Smith. The Browns and Cardinals also were interested in signing Carr.

Carr flopped with the Texans. He wasn’t any better with the Panthers, and he’s spent the last few years holding a clipboard for Eli Manning.

So what is it that the 49ers think has changed?

San Francisco now has an usually combo at the quarterback position. Carr and Smith were both former No. 1 overall picks, and neither has been able to win consistently. Among active quarterbacks with at least 40 starts, they rank last and 3rd-worst in winning percentage.

Now if they just sign Tim Couch...

Future trivia question, note how the Eagles have cornered the market on active quarterbacks with at least 40 starts who have participated in a tie game.
