Factoid
I don’t have much to say right now about Ben Roethlisberger’s off-field issues. He’s now had two different woman accuse him of sexual assaults. Time will tell how those cases shake out. For now, it adds some risk to those who choose to select the high-profile quarterback.
In a separate arena, there’s also increased risk in choosing Roethlisberger. He hangs onto the ball a lot longer than the typical NFL quarterback, and that makes him more suspectible to potentially missing time with an injury. He definitely gets hit more than the majority of quarterbacks.
Look at the chart below, which shows the average number of pass plays per sack. Quarterbacks like Drew Brees and Peyton Manning are getting sacked, on average, only once per every 35 times they attempt to pass. With Roethlisberger at quarterback (he tends to hang onto the ball), the Steelers are down at 11.2 over the last three years – last in the league.
So even setting aside off-field issues, Roethlisberger is less likely than many other quarterbacks to stay in the lineup for all 16 games. He missed one game last year, with a concussion.
