I’m currently going through a bunch of the different stat charts we maintain around here. It’s all part of the scouting process – you see which names jump out at you. And that helps when it comes time to slot players.
At the kicker position, one of the charts I maintain is field goal accuracy in the range of 40 to 49 yards. Anything inside the 40, is practically a gimme for today’s kickers – they’re all that good. And the 50-plus kicks are the tough ones, where accuracy can be dependent in part on weather and field conditions.
It’s 40 to 49 yards, I figure, that’s a real measuring stick range. Those are kicks that guys need to be able to make, but they’re not so easy that anybody can just go out and chip them in.
I notice, looking at the figures for the last three years (total numbers for all three seasons), that as luck would have, the top two guys are both currently unrestricted free agents. Some team, it seems, could pick up a nice option at the kicker position in the coming weeks.
