Around the NFL
Jamaal Charles was huge in the second half of the season for Kansas City, no doubt carrying many owners to fantasy titles. He wasn't huge enough, however, to keep the team from adding another at least borderline starter-quality running back.
According to this story at ESPN.com, Kansas City has agreed to a 2-year, $5 million deal with former Jet Thomas Jones. Although it's not clear whether Jones will be given a shot to earn the starting job over Charles, he'll likely do more than just spell Charles at that price.
A committee between the two is most likely, with Jones the early favorite to get work around the goal line and Charles more likely to play in passing situations. Something like what the Jets had in mind with Jones and Leon Washington last season seems likely.
Jones is 31 years old and seemed to have lost a step by late last season, which helped Shonn Greene emerge. There's little doubt that Charles is the more talented, more explosive option at this point.
Charles' value, however, definitely takes a hit with the threat of Jones getting a decent share of the work, including scoring most of the team's short touchdowns.
