Around the NFL
New Washington coach Mike Shanahan endorsed Clinton Portis as his starting running back recently. That endorsement, however, didn't keep the team from signing Larry Johnson.
According to this report at NFL.com, Washington has signed Johnson to a three-year, $12 million deal. With that kind of money, it's safe to say a two-back system of some kind is in order.
Neither back is particularly exciting, of course: Portis comes off an injury-riddled season where he rushed for a career-low 494 yards and 1 TD. Johnson rushed for 581 yards with two teams, a career-low 3.3 yards per carry, and didn't score all season. Call it more of a 3-4 punch than a 1-2.
