Around the NFL
Kurt Warner's emergence as a fantasy star back in 1999 is arguably the NFL's unlikeliest success story. Has Warner's retirement a decade later opened the door for another one?
According to this report at NFL.com, the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks have extended contract offers to restricted free agent Charlie Whitehurst, the third-string quarterback in San Diego. Don't feel bad if you've never heard of him; the Chargers drafted him with a third-round pick way back in 2006, and the next NFL pass he throws will be his first.
It's not clear whether either team has discussed acquiring Whitehurst from San Diego for less than the original pick compensation signing him would require (a third-rounder). Seattle doesn't have a third-round pick, and would need to work something else out.
Should he land with the Cardinals at the cost of a mid-round pick, it speaks volumes about how confident the Cardinals are in Matt Leinart, and opens the door for Whitehurst -- whose father spent seven seasons with Green Bay -- to take control of one of the league's most talented offenses. With Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston, certainly, it's a nice pair of receivers to throw to.
This is not necessarily a recommendation to run out and snap Whitehurst up in dynasty leagues, but it doesn't say much about Leinart's future, either.
