Looking at the 49ers today. I see that they were the 2nd-most effective team last year inside the 10-yard line.
In that area, San Francisco scored on 17 of 46 plays (that’s not including field goals; but it does include 2-point conversions, since those are telling, make-or-break plays). That works out to 37 percent, 2nd-best behind Arizona.
I’m not saying the 49ers are going to emerge as an elite offense. Note that only three teams (all bad teams) ran fewer plays in that part of the field. But it’s a sign that Alex Smith and the boys were at least doing something right. Maybe there’s some hope for that offense (particularly with the NFC West looking like the league’s worst division).
Looking at those 46 plays, I notice that not one of them involved Michael Crabtree. They didn’t even attempt to throw a pass to him in that part of the field. I attribute that to Crabtree’s lengthy holdout. You can be sure he’ll be used more around the goal line this season.
