Patriots add Crumpler, and sundial to time him

Posted Mar. 18 at 09:40 PM

The Patriots are reportedly about to sign Alge Crumpler, bringing the veteran tight end in to replace departed Benjamin Watson. Well, sort of; the two players are vastly different at this stage of their career, as the numbers show.

In Watson, the Patriots had one of the better downfield threats at tight end, a player with good running ability (as anyone who remembers him chasing down Champ Bailey after an interception during a playoff game a few years back recalls). In Crumpler, they'll add one of the league's slowest players at the position; he's essentially an extra blocker at this point. (Albeit a pretty good one.)

A year ago 36 tight ends caught at least 25 passes, including both Watson and Crumpler. While Watson was a league leader at his position in yards per catch, Crumpler was way down at the bottom of the rankings. Field stretching isn't his bag; receiving tight end is likely a position the Patriots will look to address in the draft. That player, not Crumpler, figures to have more fantasy value.

The Boston Globe reports the imminent Crumpler signing right here. The numbers for yards per reception among tight ends last season are presented below.
