One of the theories you hear kicked around is that C.J. Spiller won’t be successful because Buffalo’s offensive line isn’t good enough. He won’t have anywhere to run.
I don’t buy it. Buffalo may have a lesser line, but it’s not necessarily as good-awful as you might think. I remember Fred Jackson having some big games behind that line last year.
And the great backs, as history has shown time and time again, don’t need blocking – great blocking, anyway. Think of Barry Sanders, Marshall Faulk and LaDainian Tomlinson. All three of those backs were drafted by teams that were far worse than the Bills, yet all three of those guys were stars right away – not only in their first year, but in their very first games.
Not that Spiller is necessarily quite in that class, but he’s supposed to be something special. If he is, I think he’ll do just fine this year. That’s why I’ve selected him with my fifth-round pick in the Fanex draft. He should translate well to this system. He won’t get credit for the 1-2 TDs he’ll score on kick returns, but he might catch 40 passes, and he would get a point for each of those.
Spiller, by the way, wasn’t quite the highest-ranking player on my board. But I figured I’d sacrifice a little production to get the running back position finished. If I hadn’t gone running back at 5.04, I might have had to force a pick on a crappy back around the 10th round. Now I can focus on getting another oar in the water at that spot.
