Around the NFL
The Giants lost kick returner Domenik Hixon to a torn ACL the other day, which is a blow to their fantasy defense and special teams unit. It's not, however, something most fantasy coaches will spend much time thinking about.
But should they? Hixon's injury occurred during the Giants' first practice at their new stadium, and this story in the New York Daily News puts forth the theory that the new FieldTurf played a factor. According to writer Ralph Vacchiano, the injury occurred after Hixon appeared to catch his foot in the artificial surface; that was how coach Tom Coughlin saw it, as well.
GM Jerry Reese, though, said the injury could have happened just as easily on a grass field. He conceded that the turf itself needed some time to "settle," and that "we hope to have all the kinks out before we get on it again."
Fantasy coaches will no doubt be hoping that's the case before somebody more significant -- Shonn Greene or Hakeem Nicks, say -- spends too much time out practicing.
