Around the NFL
The New York Post is unloading on LaDainian Tomlinson. 'LaDainian Is Pretty Much LaDone' screams the headline of Bart Hubbach's column today.
"Even without pads or contact, it didn't take a grizzled NFL scout to notice in the Jets' recent workouts that Tomlinson just doesn't look like the same player who terrified opposing defenses with his slippery moves and sublime hands for nine seasons with the Chargers," writes writes Hubbach in his column today.
It's not a controversial opinion. Tomlinson averaged only 3.3 yards per carry last year, 2nd-lowest among all backs with at least 100 carries. He averaged over 4.0 yards per carry in only one game all year -- the opener at Oakland.
"One of Gang Green's more curious moves this offseason was jettisoning Thomas Jones after a 1,402-yard rushing year and signing Tomlinson to replace him," Hubbuch writes.
That's where I would disagree with Hubbuch. I don't envision Tomlinson doing anything, but Jones also clearly is on the decline (he's a year older than Tomlinson). When Shonn Greene was ripping it up in the postseason, Jones averaged under 3 yards per carry in all three of those games.
