Optimism about Eric Decker

Posted Jul. 13 at 10:06 PM

The Broncos selected the draft's first wide receiver, Demaryius Thomas, back in April. But those around the team have had equally positive things to say about third-rounder Eric Decker.

In his latest mailbag at the Denver Post, Mike Klis says Decker "has a chance to become a cross between Ed McCaffrey and Steve Largent" -- lofty praise. Klis notes that the Gophers' offense last year seemed to be primarily throw to Decker right, throw to Decker left, throw to Decker over the middle.

Decker is coming off a foot injury, but Klis says he'll be ready to go for the start of training camp two weeks from now. It's hardly an anomaly when a player outperforms a player at the same position drafted earlier -- think of Mohamed Massaquoi compared to Brian Robiskie in Cleveland last year. Maybe this year's story will be Decker.

That said, Denver has a lot of wideouts competing for catches. Decker may well turn out to be the best player long-term, but projections for his rookie season should be kept modest.

Other tidbits from Klis' mailbag include why he thinks Kyle Orton should remain the starter all season and what it will take to get Josh McDaniels fired.
