It looks like Brett Favre is in danger of becoming the second-most interesting preseason story for the Minnesota Vikings. The other one appears to be Sidney Rice's sore hip.
According to this report from Sports Illustrated's Don Banks, Rice injured his hip in the NFC Championship game last year. Probably why he was slow to get over and catch Favre's perfect throw in the waning moments that was intercepted. No, just kidding.
Banks says two doctors recommended Rice have surgery on the hip, but he decided against it. Rice is on the camp PUP list and "taking it day to day." He's confident he'll be ready for the start of the season, but according to Banks "there's some building skepticism."
Rice is in a contract year, hoping for a new deal he's unlikely to get before the start of the season. Odds are he'll be on the field when the season begins.
But it would be nice to see him looking in tip-top shape in an exhibition game, so it's gradually turning into something to monitor at Vikings camp. You know, besides Favre.

Favre will probably announce his retirement soon. He does this every year and by the third preseason game he will receive a big uncapped year pay boost. After all.... his wife recently renewed her membership at her fitness club in Minneapolis.

You might be right about the retirement announcement, based on what is currently being reported. As for membership renewals, well, that stuff can always be cancelled. I guess I'm starting to buy the idea that he might actually hang 'em up. Maybe I'm just a sucker, I don't know.
