Around the NFL
To read the New York Post last week, you might have guessed Plaxico Burress would step right out of prison onto the field for the Giants in the next month or so. Forgive the pun, but it appears the newspaper jumped the gun a little bit.
In the first place, the source was just a visitor to Burress' cell; his own attorney says the idea Burress would be out soon is "certainly premature." He added, "I don't see a return to football happening in the short term."
The other thing to keep in mind is that Giants GM Jerry Reese, who didn't rule out bringing Burress back, pointed out that he never rules anything out. "You know my line on personnel decisions: We investigate everything," he said to the New York Daily News. "We leave all our options open. That's it. That's all I say. That's my standard line on personnel stuff."
When Burress does get out of prison, it actually seems more likely he'll sign with the Jets. Even after trading for Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes in the last 12 months, the Jets have kicked the tires on Terrell Owens, plus they were interested in Burress after the Giants released him.
Regardless, it's too soon to say the wideout will be released anytime soon, let alone catching passes in the NFL in 2010.
