Around the NFL
Matt Leinart entered training camp as Arizona's top quarterback. He'll probably finish the preseason off the 53-man roster.
Arizona Republic writer Dan Bickley believes Leinart sealed his fate with a tirade after practice about his apparent demotion. Even setting that outburst aside, the writing was on the wall for Leinart.
He hasn't played well this preseason, and obviously didn't respond well to the idea that Derek Anderson might move ahead of him. Moreover, the Cardinals have found themselves two rookie quarterbacks they can't afford to cut: fifth-rounder John Skelton, and the undrafted Max Hall. Neither player would make it through to the practice squad if Arizona releases them.
It's possible that Leinart will be traded, but he's got a big salary for a backup quarterback. It's also possible that he'll be kept, with Arizona carrying four quarterbacks. Given that Derek Anderson could implode in any given week, Arizona might want to have a backup with some starting experience.
But the most likely scenario right now is that when the Cardinals go to 53 players, Leinart won't be one of them.
