I put up 157 in the SuperLeague. Eh. Sunday I benched andre for a hunch on DJax, which worked out well. Like most, I imagine, I got burned by austin and schaub.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:29 AM
Andy: Welcome aboard. Looks like Ian had a gigantic Week 3 - the Super League site has him at 180, which exceeds the math I had for him by a lot, so he must have made some changes after he posted his lineup. I'm at 108 for the week, but with Aaron Rodgers AND Greg Jennings AND Jermichael Finley AND Mason Crosby coming tonight. Expecting to lose to Ian (finally), but I'm also expecting to have a big night, so we'll see how close I come.

All: We're still exploring our software options, but welcome to the first of these chats hosted at the Fantasy Index website. I'll be here until the game ends; submit any questions, comments, etc., and I'll try to respond to all of them. If you're just lurking, welcome anyway.

I've done these live-blogs at Twitter and then (last night) Facebook for every prime-time game so far this season, and this one really ought to be one of the good ones. We'll see if Mike Martz has indeed rediscovered his mojo; we'll see if Grantless Green Bay can get a running game going; we should see a bunch of points scored both ways. Looking forward to it.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:40 AM
A 15-1 regular season doesn't "culminate" in a Super Bowl win, right? Doesn't it have to culminate at some point in the regular season? Or are we not using words to mean what they mean anymore?
Posted by ANDY RICHARDSON | Sep. 27 at 10:42 AM
I'm going to set the over-under for sacks at 7. Justin, in the other thread, I didn't want to praise Edwards as much as condemn Brian Brohm, who I've disliked since before he was drafted. And he'll probably be the Bills starter in around Week 7, and he'll make Edwards look ...well, not good. But a little better.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:43 AM
Also have Knox going in my favorite league, so I'm rooting for high scores all around.
Posted by ANDY RICHARDSON | Sep. 27 at 10:43 AM
BTW, I agree Spiller didn't go nuts, either. It wouldn't be a bad time to sell high on him if you've got him. Then again, two of the leagues where I have him, return yardage counts, so that was a 24-point day for him yesterday...not bad.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:44 AM
Andy: Agreed on Brohm, except that I think he'll just look a lot like Edwards. You are so, so lucky if you root for any other team.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:45 AM
Bears' throwbacks are awesome. They ought to put the Cs back on the helmets and call those the every-week uniforms.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:47 AM
Andy: Yeah, Spiller's a stud in any format that counts return yards. He gets to run a kick back every 8 minutes, like clockwork.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:50 AM
These Bears are clearly not incompetent. I mentioned in the preseason that Cutler is the best QB Martz has ever had as of the moment their relationship started. It's not close; Warner became much better, but when the relationship started Warner was a grocery-bagger.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:51 AM
And I type that, and the clearly-not-incompetent Bears miss the FG. Oh, well. Lot of that happening around the league lately.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:52 AM
NOTE: I also called Cutler a "turnip" in the preseason, and I stand by that. Not sure the inevitable sacks will be his undoing, but I am sure the INTs will. I don't see CHI as a playoff team.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:53 AM
There's a point for me in the Super League!
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:54 AM
Another couple of points! 2 for Finley! 1 for Rodgers! I'm going to be obnoxious about this all night!
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:56 AM
Theory: If both stay healthy, Peyton and Rodgers will wage unholy war this season for the league lead in yards. Neither team can run AT ALL unless GB trades for someone.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:57 AM
In that league where I have Knox going, I'm up 8 points or so and the other team has Driver. That's the one player I'm rooting against.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:59 AM
HERE'S A BONUS IF ANYONE'S OUT THERE: Be the first reader to respond to this post right here and I'll invite you to play in my league next year. Downside: I'll beat you. Badly.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 10:59 AM
10 points for me in the Super League! We're off and running!
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:03 AM
"He can run a lot of routes - and most of 'em are deep." Isn't that kinda contradictory?
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:06 AM
By my quick math I've got 17 points on the night so far. Ian 180, Justin 125. We're movin'.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:08 AM
What is Woodson doing on Olsen - even if he's split out wide?
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:10 AM
Jay Cutler. Turnip.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:13 AM
I'd give anything for Jaws to use the word "turnip" just once tonight.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:14 AM
Waste of a possession right there. I need every point you can give me, Mr. Rodgers.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:18 AM
7-0 GB after one quarter, if anyone's following but not watching (not that anyone would). Feels like we're about to cut loose; this game should be a race to 30 or even 40.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:20 AM
Now we're looking at a Mike Martz offense. Pick ... dropped pick ... sack in four snaps.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:21 AM
Cutler playing like Mike Vick here in almost every respect.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:21 AM
Except that Vick now plays more like Cunningham or some other better passer.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:23 AM
I know we're seeing a lot of sacks, but that one wasn't a coverage sack. He just beat the line.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:24 AM
Packers backed up to their own 7 after the punt. I'll take 93 passing yards from Rodgers here, and I'll take every one of them to Finley, please.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:27 AM
27/93 yards to Finley there. Keep it going.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:28 AM
That's a big play by Rodgers. Won't show up on any stat sheet, but keeping his feet under him SOLELY to avoid the sack is large.
Posted by Chris Metz | Sep. 27 at 11:30 AM
Think Cunningham of 98 is a good comparison to what Vick can do this year? He has weapons, good system...
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:30 AM
Another big play. Rodgers is my hero.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:35 AM
Chris: I just don't think Vick is good enough. That's the only hesitation I have; look at yesterday's numbers - it's really hard to average 9.4 yards per attempt on 55% completions. Really hard. Meaning, he was really lucky. Meaning, he'll have to throw a LOT more than he has so far to average 250+ yards per game. And I just don't think Reid will let him throw more. I think he'll settle into something like 220 yards average, and he'll do some damage with his legs, and if he has two real clunkers in a row (and he can, clearly, in a throw-first system) we'll see Kolb again.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:36 AM
Need these 3 from Crosby. Let's bang it through.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:36 AM
Nice!
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:39 AM
Now 10-0 GB, if you're not watching. My math says I have 28 points on the night, so Ian 180, Justin 136. Need the Bears to score now so the Packers have to keep up the pace. I told someone this afternoon the final score tonight would be 41-28 GB. Bears have to hold up their end.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:39 AM
The penalty on the kick helps. Turnip has field position.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:43 AM
Pretty sure Bennett was the turnip on that last play.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:47 AM
I keep forgetting to write this: R.I.P. GEORGE BLANDA.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:48 AM
The problem with giving Brandon Jackson a shot to make it: He's awful.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:50 AM
These guys are ignoring a simple fact: Sure, Grant was undrafted and they have other undrafted guys, and Grant was undrafted but Jackson was a second-rounder. That's all true. BUT GRANT WAS PLAYING AHEAD OF ALL OF THESE GUYS FOR A REASON.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:53 AM
That was just a terrible punt. He may have saved his job making that tackle.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:54 AM
There we go, Bears. Make this a shootout.
Posted by Chris Metz | Sep. 27 at 11:55 AM
Say what one will about Cutler, I think he can throw it and this offense allows him huge chunks of yardage at once to make up for past mistakes. He's good if your format does not punish INTs.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:56 AM
Heady play from the turnip there. Nicely done on the shovel pass.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:56 AM
Stanley: In your league you're undefeated after three weeks. That is good, and you're welcome.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 11:59 AM
Chris: Agreed, Cutler's potential fantasy gold. Unless one of these sacks is the last one he takes. But he reminds me of a line my old friend Gene McCaffrey (Wise Guy Baseball) once wrote about Andruw Jones: "You know that gleam in the eye that most reasonably smart people have? Andruw ain't got it."
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:02 PM
And THAT is why it's silly to penalize QBs for INTs in fantasy football.
Posted by Chris Metz | Sep. 27 at 12:03 PM
Cutler is really tough at least. He may not be a genius, but he isn't Jeff George v2.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:04 PM
At least 60% of all INTs are tips, goofy Hail Mary plays, otherworldly plays by defenders or poor plays by intended receivers. The other 40% are thrown by Derek Anderson and Matt Moore.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:05 PM
Chris: He's better than George by thismuch, but he is better.
Posted by Chris Metz | Sep. 27 at 12:06 PM
Jon Gruden loves every player in the league until he hangs around them for a season.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:09 PM
So I count 29 points for the Super League entry at the half. Not disappointing, but I would've been a lot happier had Ian stuck with his initial roster. I had him with 157 points through yesterday; the site shows 180. So at present it appears to be Ian 180, Justin 137. I can still win the week if the shootout materializes. Just need the TD passes to go to the right guys.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:12 PM
Chris: Jon is the original turnip. I was a Bucs fan until I moved to Ithaca and became the only Bills fan under the age of 50. Knew we (meaning TB) were in trouble the minute I saw the Super Bowl video. Gruden was just a glorified cheerleader on the sideline. I was embarrassed for him, watching it.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:13 PM
By the way, NO ONE wants into my league? One of my readers is already in, and he's competitive. I'm holding the offer open the rest of the night: First person to ask in will be invited in 2011.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:15 PM
And since I have Knox there (and everywhere else), I'm comfortable giving this away: I'd trade for him right now in every league. I'd treat him as a true No. 1 WR, and I'd give up anything shy of that to get him. He'll be very, very big the rest of the way.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:16 PM
80 yards coming. Rodgers-to-Jennings.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:17 PM
After the penalty, 85 yards coming!
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:17 PM
Jordy Nelson. Bah.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:18 PM
Finley does not look anything like a TE.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:20 PM
I go to the movies twice a year these days. I'm going to see The Social Network. Sorkin and Fincher working together is so perfect I can't believe they didn't do it before now.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:21 PM
Also: I made it into the third quarter, but I will now commence drinking on the job.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:23 PM
Only better combos than Sorkin/Fincher are Nolan/Nolan and Coen/Coen - and only like 40% of the time on the second of those.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:24 PM
Also, I guess: Ball/Mendes.
Posted by Roy Sherman | Sep. 27 at 12:25 PM
At this point, I think Finley may be better than all three of my WRs (D.Jackson, Nicks, Know).
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:25 PM
This DirecTV commercial is the best thing on TV right now. I also like savings the money.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:27 PM
Roy: Hardly matters if Finley's better than those guys; you're pretty strong there.
Posted by Roy Sherman | Sep. 27 at 12:30 PM
I have Gore, Turner, and Foster as my RBs. I'm thinking about trying to package Foster and either Nicks or Knox for an elite WR.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:30 PM
Finley just hit 95 yards receiving on the night.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:32 PM
Roy: No, please! Foster's the best possible insurance policy for two injury-prone RBs, and Nicks and Knox might BOTH be elite WRs themselves right now. You can't win doing that.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:32 PM
Roy: I'm confident Nicks isn't just off to a hot start, and I'm telling you I think Knox is a true No. 1 the rest of the season. He looks awesome to me.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:33 PM
Ugh. Needed those 3 in the Super League. This drive went so swimmingly otherwise ...
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:34 PM
Roy: Besides, you own NICKS & KNOX. It sounds so cool, don't you have to let that play out?
Posted by Roy Sherman | Sep. 27 at 12:35 PM
I'll need to move two of my WRs before wk 8 though.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:35 PM
Bears take over with about half of the third quarter gone, still down 10-7.
Posted by Roy Sherman | Sep. 27 at 12:36 PM
Nicks & Knox does have a certain ring to it
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:37 PM
Roy: Can't you just lose for a week? I mean, isn't it better to tank one week completely and have the strongest possible roster in every other week?
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:37 PM
Here comes the shootout. Finally.
Posted by Roy Sherman | Sep. 27 at 12:38 PM
That might work. Who knows, I may still be undefeated then with a comfortable lead in our league.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:38 PM
That electric orange on the Bears' jerseys tonight is just sick-wicked. They really ought to keep that forever.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:40 PM
Roy: I always kinda like to tank a week anyway. Sends a message to your leaguemates: "I don't even need to try every week."
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:42 PM
Just realized I'm probably an enormous pain in the ass. Dear JFNFL leaguemates: Sorry about that ...
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:42 PM
... but you're kinda asking for it, losing to the Mississippi Queens EVERY WEEK.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:43 PM
Mike Martz. Turnip.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:51 PM
Clock runs out on the third quarter and what we have here is a 10-7 barnburner. Plenty of offense up and down the field, but almost no scoring. Nothing that happens in the fourth will surprise me.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:52 PM
I mentioned that I only go to the movies a couple of times per year? I won't be seeing Hereafter, thank you.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:53 PM
Wow. Hester. 14-10 CHI. I take it back; I am a little surprised.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:55 PM
37 points for me in the Super League. Ian 180, Justin 145.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:57 PM
Is that a twist of dreads at the back of a mohawk? Is that what I'm looking at when Hester's helmet comes off?
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:57 PM
Brandon Jackson: 5 carries, 11 yards.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 12:58 PM
James Jones Donald Driver.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:00 PM
Hmm. That last one was supposed to have a GREATER THAN sign between the two names. James Jones GREATER THAN Donald Driver.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:02 PM
Rodgers just hit 300 yards passing.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:03 PM
You heard correctly. John Kuhn, out of Shippensburg University.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:05 PM
Good form from the school - the web address is http://www.ship.edu/. So many schools take themselves so, so seriously.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:06 PM
Let's hit Jennings here already, puh-leaze.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:09 PM
Rodgers! 6 points for me in the Super League! Bears should never have called that timeout!
Posted by KEVIN DALLAS | Sep. 27 at 01:10 PM
hey J...my computer has been fixed, but have been told I need to upgrade my memory card.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:11 PM
"My father's legacy isn't money. It's the will to win!" Secretariat looks really, really crappy.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:12 PM
Kevin: Get that taken care of right away. No one else chats with me.
Posted by KEVIN DALLAS | Sep. 27 at 01:13 PM
not in real life he didn't
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:13 PM
Ian 180, Justin 156.
Posted by KEVIN DALLAS | Sep. 27 at 01:16 PM
17th in my division in the free salary cap league going into tonight dropped to 5th in my league in FC, but rodgers, finley and knox to hopefully help that out
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:17 PM
Kevin: No, that's true. Good horse. You know the autopsy showed his heart was like twice the size it was supposed to be? Thoroughbreds are done evolving; they maxed out their speed potential in the early 20th century, which is why the Triple Crown is so tough - they don't get faster generation after generation like human swimmers and sprinters do. But a freak - literally, a mutant with a giant heart - has a real advantage.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:18 PM
Kevin: I shouldn't say they're done EVOLVING. The bone structure could always evolve, in which case the muscle potential and speed potential would change. But they're done for our lifetimes, anyway.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:19 PM
Hit this, Robbie. Then Rodgers keeps trying.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:20 PM
From 29 yards, Robbie is ... erm ... gold.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:21 PM
Alright, then. 17-17. 4:03 left.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:22 PM
Or 3:59, I guess.
Posted by KEVIN DALLAS | Sep. 27 at 01:22 PM
it was actually three times the size of a normal horse's heart, it was huge...too much inbreeding of thoroughbreds, absolutely.
Posted by KEVIN DALLAS | Sep. 27 at 01:27 PM
knew as soon as i counted it a win, they would screw up
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:32 PM
Kevin: They're one of the only species that's been bred for a particular trait (in this case, speed) nonstop for hundreds and hundreds of years. When that happens, every generation is "better" (here: faster) than the one before - and that was true of the horses - until the bones max out in terms of the amount of functional muscle they can support, and then subsequent generations get no better. I know this because I read a long article about dinosaurs' footspeed in 10th grade, which was a long time ago now. TRIVIA YOU CAN ALL USE TO IMPRESS WOMEN AT WORK TOMORROW: According to the article, the Triceratops was most likely the swiftest dinosaur. Counterintuitive, that, I know.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:34 PM
The little guy who's serving as Ndamukong's tailor is perfectly cast. Boom!
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:35 PM
I don't get to type N-d-a-m-u-k-o-n-g nearly often enough.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:36 PM
OK, lousy fumble for GB; CHI now driving. We're coming out of the two-minute warning with CHI at the GB 35 or so.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:36 PM
Tricky run with Johnny Knox doesn't work on 1st & 10; Packers call a timeout.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:38 PM
Pressure on Cutler on 2nd & 8; he lofts a duck; Burnett saves him by tackling Bennett to nullify the INT and give the Bears a certain score of some sort, coming up, unless Cutler throws another pick.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:38 PM
Forte bulls to the 3 on 1st & goal. Clock ticking.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:39 PM
Short play on 2nd down. GB calls its last TO. :53 remaining, 3rd & goal. Clock will run way down unless GB allows a TD here.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:41 PM
No TD. Clock running down to :08. Gould gets a chip-shot to win the thing. Bears will be 3-0 unless something truly wacky happens.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:42 PM
Gould bangs it through, and Bears lead 20-17 with :04 remaining. Green Bay will lose this game because it failed to put Chicago away when it could have done so. Also: I finally lose one to Ian. I'll give you a final score soon, but big deal; he wasn't going 0-17.
Posted by KEVIN DALLAS | Sep. 27 at 01:44 PM
18 penalties...as a Browns fan, I don't feel that bad...oh yeah, we're 0-3, never mind
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:44 PM
Love the referee signaling that the last forward lateral was incomplete.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:48 PM
Funny: My math says I finish the night with 50 points, and thus finish the week with 158. I had Ian at 157 coming in - that would have KILLED him - but, again, he must have changed things up after posting his roster (or maybe I had something wrong). In any event, final score appears to be Ian 180, Justin 158. I'm up 3 on the season. To continue a theme, we now have a horse race.
Posted by JUSTIN ELEFF | Sep. 27 at 01:49 PM
That'll wrap things up here. I've enjoyed it. I'm doing these all season, covering most prime-time games, so keep checking back - and, please, follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/FantasyIndexJE. Goodnight, kids.

Justin: In the Super League deal, when Pierre Garcon was ruled out on Friday, I pulled Andre Johnson from my lineup and stuck in Austin Collie.
