Fitzgerald hurt by poor quarterbacking

Posted Nov. 06 at 03:55 PM

Everyone knew and expected that Darrius Heyward-Bey would be one of the league’s least effective starting receivers this year. He’s caught only 41 percent of the passes thrown his way, last among the 50 players with at least 45 pass attempts this season.

But there are some unexpected names joining him at the bottom. Larry Fitzgerald. Randy Moss. Other than Heyward-Bey, those guys have caught the lowest percentage of passes in the league (again, among those who have seen at least 45 throws).

At the other end of the spectrum are Austin Collie and Davone Bess. Those guys have both caught over 75 percent of their throws.

We’re not saying Collie or Bess is better than Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald has been held back by suspect quarterback. And Moss has run primarily deep routes, which brings down his average. Collie and Bess operate out of the slot, where you tend to see players catch a higher percentage of balls (but for fewer yards).

But it’s one of the statistical trends we look at from time to time.
