Arizona / defensive touchdowns

Posted Dec. 26 at 04:03 PM

Arizona may be a last-place team in the NFC West, but it keeps scoring touchdowns on defensive and special teams plays. It’s now up to 10 such TDs by our count, a level reached by only nine other teams in the last 25 years.

(Officially, Arizona has scored 12 of those touchdowns, but two came when fumbles by offensive players were recovered for touchdowns – so their defense wasn’t on the field).

A couple of observations about this run.

First, not that of the 10 teams to score 10 of these touchdowns, all but one were located in the West Divisions. Maybe there’s some kind of a time-zone factor that’s contributing here (or maybe it’s just a chance deal). But for whatever reason, this kind of thing seems to happen more as you move west.

Second, Arizona has managed to win only 5 games despite picking up all the freebie touchdowns. When you still can’t win with extra points, that’s a strong sign that a team is pretty bad.
