Newton to be top pick?

Posted Feb. 22 at 04:31 AM

Heisman Trophy winner, then National Champion. Will Auburn quarterback Cam Newton's next title be the 2011 NFL Draft's top pick?

Gil Brandt, for a long time the Dallas Cowboys' VP of player personnel and currently an analyst for NFL.com, says "It would shock me... if he's not the first player picked." As reported in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Brandt went on to say. "If I was drafting and I had Carolina's [No. 1] pick, I'd feel really good about who I was getting as far as ability.'

The linked article notes that there may be some concerns among NFL decision-makers regarding "entitlement issues" with Newton, who recently held a pre-Combine private workout for media members (but not NFL scouts). He was also at the center of a recruiting scandal last year, although he was ultimately cleared by the NCAA.

But Brandt doesn't believe those concerns will prevent him from being the No. 1 overall pick, either to Carolina or -- in the event they aren't sold on Newton, or want to stockpile picks -- the team they deal that pick to.

Since I posted this, Peter King tweeted that Newton said to him, "I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon." Super.
