Around the NFL
If you were hoping to draft second-year tight end Jimmy Graham as a sleeper next year, you can definitely forget it now. He should be the clear starter in one of the league's best passing offenses after the Saints cut Jeremy Shockey today.
Details can be seen here; the move isn't a total surprise. Shockey was hurt for much of last season and finished with the worst numbers of his career.
But perhaps more importantly, the Saints seem to have a star in the making in the very talented (albeit raw) Graham. The rookie barely played in the first half of the season, then caught 5 TDs from Week 9 on; 4 in the last three games of the year. The Saints will remain an offense that moves the ball around a lot, but Graham should be their best tight end -- perhaps even their most productive scorer.
Shockey, for his part, says the team that signs him will get a steal, but they'll definitely be taking on a player with substantial injury risk. He will turn 31 before the start of the season, and has taken a lot of punishment over his career.
