Cowboys won't select McFadden

Posted Mar. 29 at 07:36 PM

Dallas owner Jerry Jones says he won’t make a splashy trade to go after Darren McFadden in the draft.

That’s what Randy Galloway is reporting in a column in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

“"I have no intent at all of moving into the top five," Jones tells Galloway, explaining that the team wants no part of having to commit that much money to a rookie. "A team can get crippled, and I mean seriously crippled, from a financial standpoint by being up there in the top five or six. It's a real negative.”

Galloway figures that the Cowboys are far more likely to select a running back with one of the first-round pick that they already hold. They’ve got the No. 22 selection (from the Brady Quinn trade), and they’ve got their own pick at No. 28. Selecting the other Arkansas running back, Felix Jones, is a possibility, Galloway says.

Galloway also writes that the Cowboys consider this to be one of the deepest drafts ever for running backs, which makes a trade for McFadden make less sense.

"We need a running back to go with (Marion) Barber, but with the high regard we have for him, combined with what's available in this draft, it makes no sense to me to be going up there to the top of the draft," Jerry Jones says. "I think we can find what we need where we are."
