I’ve got the third-down receiving data in front of me, and I’m seeing some unusual names. Many of the players who caught the most passes on third downs aren’t players you would expect.
Steve Johnson No. 2 in the entire league? You bet. He caught 30 passes on third downs.
At wide receivers, I’m also seeing Danny Amendola, Davone Bess and Jordan Shipley in the top 10. Earl Bennett and Chansi Stuckey show up on the list of leaders as well.
At running back, Jason Snelling caught as many passes as any other running back, and Mike Goodson ranked 4th.
And at tight end, Tony Moeaki and Dante Rosario both caught more passes on third downs than many of the more-heralded tight ends in the league (such as Vernon Davis, Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez).
