Beat writer's "best guess" at QB: Bulger

Posted Apr. 04 at 05:35 AM

The Cardinals don't have a quarterback for next season, unless you count the uninspiring incumbents who labored for the team last season. Not surprisingly, most of the questions Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic got in a recent chat centered on that major question mark.

Somers is pretty connected when it comes to the Cardinals, so his opinions have value. And he thinks that Marc Bulger is a strong candidate to be the team's quarterback in 2011.

Somers also believes the team will at least make a call about the availability of Carson Palmer, doesn't sound optimistic about them making a play for Kevin Kolb, and thinks there's "zero chance" of Vince Young coming to Arizona. By the way, he also thinks the chances of Kurt Warner coming out of retirement are close to zero, in case you were thinking about that.

According to Somers, Ken Whisenhunt has said multiple times that he doesn't believe there's a Sam Bradford in this year's draft. That could just be a smoke screen, of course, but if accurate you can pretty much rule out the Cardinals selecting a quarterback with their first-round pick.

One more note: Somers does see some potential in John Skelton, not as a 2011 starter, but down the road. As for Max Hall, Somers thinks his best shot of sticking around is on the practice squad.
