Matt Ryan / yards per pass attempt

Posted Apr. 07 at 03:00 AM

Matt Ryan is on the road to greatness, I think. He’s 33-13 as a starter in his first three seasons, which is remarkable. Only Peyton Manning has won more games, and only Manning and Tom Brady (who missed the 2008 season) have higher winning percentages in that span.

Ryan tossed only 9 interceptions last year, and he threw 28 TDs. He’s doing well.

But I notice, looking at the numbers, that Ryan hasn’t made as many throws downfield as you would like. Not sure how much that has to do with him versus how much is due to Atlanta being limited at receiver. They’ve got Roddy White, but Michael Jenkins hasn’t developed and Tony Gonzalez is slowing down.

Anyway Ryan last season, as well as he played, averaged only 6.49 yards per pass attempt last year. That’s better than only a handful of other quarterbacks – Derek Anderson, Shaun Hill and the two rookies (Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen).
